National Junior Honor Society
Select Students | Grades 6-8
Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a middle school student. Our chapter of NJHS has worked hard to bring the accomplishments of outstanding students to the attention of parents, teachers, peers, and the community. Our chapter, along with the more than 6,000 chapters in schools across the nations, strive to give practical meaning to the Society’s standards of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. These five ideals are considered as the basis for the selection of the nominations. No student is inducted simply because of a high academic average. The National Junior Honor Society strives to recognize the total student – one who excels in all of these areas.
Speech & Debate
Grades 6-8
This team offers students a unique chance to develop public speaking skills and have fun with teammates. According to the National Speech & Debate website, “public forum involves opposing teams of two, debating a topic concerning a current event. Students present cases, engage in rebuttal and refutation, and also participate in a ‘crossfire’ (similar to a cross examination) with the opportunity to question the opposing team.” Students will conduct independent research about the topic. Speech events also allow students to develop excellent speaking and listening skills, and require students to use critical thinking skills. Mrs. Rodine and Ms. Mauritz are the Speech & Debate coaches.
